Welcome to Issue 8 of Think Fishing. We’re now well into Autumn and with fishing the World Champs and other international commitments over for the summer, it’s my favourite time of year to fish flowing water so for this month’s issue I thought I’d bring the cameras along to a stretch of my local Bristol Avon to show you how I tackle this sort of venue. The stretch I fished is at Saltford, which is in between Bristol and Bath, and like most of the Bristol Avon it’s quite deep and generally slow moving although on the day of the filming the river was clear, but carrying a touch of extra water which had increased the flow compared to normal conditions.

What I wanted to show you was how I tackle these deep swims in flowing water and what things you can do to keep the fish coming once bites start to tail off. The Bristol Avon is generally a deep river so it can be quite tricky keeping those fish in the swim and where you can catch them so I used a continental approach of balling in groundbait at the start of the session. Hope you enjoy it and if it proves popular with you guys I’ll definitely be doing more issues on rivers in the future.
